牛津的市中心紧凑而美丽，牛津大学最古老的学院是这里的主角——色彩柔和的金色石块建造的中世纪建筑瑰宝，餐厅、礼拜堂、图书馆和宿舍区常按照修道院的格局分布在方形庭院中。许多地方看来都似曾相识，因为牛津的魅力为许多著名作家带来灵感，也为众多精彩电影和电视剧提供外景地，如科林·德克斯特（Colin Dexter）写的《莫斯侦探》（Inspector Morse）和《哈利·波特》中的霍格沃茨学校大厅。39个学院中有许多对外开放，游客可以参加徒步之旅或自行前往。大学建筑是牛津最令人印象深刻的景点，也是最著名的标志，包括十五世纪的博德利图书馆（Bodleian Library），长达110英里的书架上藏有七百万册书籍；阿什莫尔博物馆（Ashmolean Museum）是英国最古老的公共博物馆；谢尔登剧院（Sheldonian Theatre）由克里斯多弗·雷恩爵士（Sir Christopher Wren）设计，是大学举行各种仪式的中心。
